Second Semester

Building A Case:

English is, at the very least, communication.

This semester, after having examined great works of literature during the first semester, we are going to turn our sights on you and your ability to think through ethical issues.

This is a visual age; in a visual era people do not often use books to wrap their minds around the tough issue of the day.  Therefore, to lighten your load, we will look at popular culture (movies, tv shoes, magazines, advertising, documentaries) to take a look at the world we live in, and create an intelligent response.

When all is said and done, you will understand how to argue, which is to present your point and your beliefs with other people in mind.  We will teach you the Classical Rhetorical structure, which asks you to weigh in: to see an argument for many sides and come to a conclusion that takes other people's issues into consideration.

It may seem easy, but I guarantee you have not done it before.  Up to this point, your opinion has been enough.  Now, you are going to have to build a case based on global perspective -- and you will be surprised at how much you learn.
