A Whole New Story:

Literacy has changed.

Whereas 100 years ago, the world did not even have radios, now our culture is bombarded by outside information.  Like it or not, this information shapes your culture, and traditional literacy (based on reading, writing, and argumentation) has come to feel outdated.

This class will focus on understanding new literacies (internet, music, television, and film), but not without showing, as the Bible says, “there is nothing new under the sun.”  The stories we have been given, that have been passed down through the ages, become the stories we tell ourselves.

So, where do we see these stories?  Your life is filled with them.  We like to think of ourselves as individuals, but we are a composite of stories: stories we have been told, stories we retell, stories we quietly adopt as our own.  Senior English will be a study in these stories, and an extended examination of how we come to an understanding of ourselves.
